19th - 22th of July
The Cadenon Maypole Climbing, now celebrating its 83rd edition, is an event involving both Lazise citizens and tourists every year on the third Saturday of July.
Derived from an ancient popular tradition, the Cadenon maypole climbing is a contest between the different quarters (“contrade”) of the city (named Porta del Lion, Porta San Zeno, Porta Cansignorio and Boca del Porto), with teams of 5 contestants trying to conquer the Cadenon maypole. The maypole is made of a long and greased wooden stake, placed horizontally on the water of Lazise Porto Vecchio (old harbor) with a wonderful view on the ancient Dogana Veneta and San Nicolò little church. The contestant who crawls till the flag positioned at the other end of the stake and grabs it, wins the contest. The challenge is a difficult and spectacular one, with the participants running on the stake and falling on the stake or – mainly – in the water, with the supporters cheering. Only young and very young competitors born in Lazise are admitted. Foreigners cannot take part in the contest.
The maypole climbing contest is accompanied by three days of huge celebrations in Lazise.
